Dr. ALBERTO MASSI
nasce a Siena il 10 Maggio 1960, laureatosi in scienze biologiche ha svolto per lungo tempo attività di ricerca presso l’Università di Bologna. Ha iniziato lo studio della cornamusa scozzese nel 1991, grazie a due grandi appassionati toscani, Riccardo Bonanni e Francesco Focardi, fondatori del B.I.G. (Bagpipe Italian Group). Riccardo Bonanni è stato anche il suo primo maestro. In seguito egli ha seguito numerosi stage tenuti in Italia dal maestro bretone Bruno Le Rouzic, presso il quale ha frequentato anche due corsi “full immmersion” di una settimana in Bretagna. Il primo viaggio di studio in Scozia è avvenuto nel 1997, ed in quella occasione ha potuto ricevere lezioni da Andy Hunter e da Brian Lamond. Nei due successivi viaggi, 2000 e 2003, ha invece frequentato i corsi del National Piping Centre, considerato a ragione come l’accademia del piping nel mondo e, dopo aver ricevuto insegnamento da importanti maestri quali Willie Morrison, Colin MacLellan e Dougie Pincock, è divenuto allievo personale del grande Roderick MacLeod. Nel 2003 ha conseguito il “Performer’s certificate”, diploma ufficiale rilasciato dall’Institute of Piping. Nel Marzo 2003 vince Archie Kenneth Memorial Quaich, la più importante manifestazione mondiale di musica classica per cornamusa scozzese riservata ai non professionisti. In Italia, la sua attività musicale si è distribuita in vari ambiti : insegnamento, attività concertistica, saggistica. Attualmente tiene corsi di insegnamento a Bazzano (BO), Isernia, Rignano sull’Arno (FI), San Giovanni (VR) e Locarno (Svizzera). Tale attività è sempre posta sotto l’egida del B.I.G., l’associazione che in Italia si preoccupa di garantire il corretto approccio tecnico e culturale allo strumento. L’attività concertistica si divide tra performance soliste e di gruppo; ha infatti collaborato con i gruppi Birkin Tree, Fianna, Fiamma Fumana (con cui ha anche inciso “1.0”, il loro primo lavoro) e con i Whisky Trail. E’ Particolarmente brillante nel gestire esibizioni nella forma della conferenza-concerto, utilissima per la promozione di un ascolto consapevole di questa musica. E’ inoltre autore di numerosi articoli riguardanti la storia e la tecnica della cornamusa nelle riviste Piping Times, Piping Today, Folk Bulletin, Utriculus. Nella primavera del 2006 consegue il “Senior Certificate on Piping” e il “Tutor Certificate” presso l’Institute of Piping di Glasgow. Ispiratore e principale autore della collana di CD Rom Tutorial dal titolo “The Great Highland Bagpipe“, ha di recente pubblicato il suo primo album dal titolo “A Call from Afar“. Infine, collabora con il bravissimo costruttore Franco Calanca allo sviluppo e al testing delle sue cornamuse.

Alberto was born in Siena, Italy on 10 May 1960. After his degree in Biology, he worked as a researcher for the University of Bologna. Thanks to two Tuscan Scottish Pipe lovers, Riccardo Bonanni and Francesco Focardi, Alberto began studying the Scottish Pipes in 1991. Riccardo Bonnani was his first teacher. Subsequently, he has participated in many courses in Italy held by Bruno Le Rouzic and two one-week “full immersion” courses in Britannia . His first study trip was in Scotland in 1997 where his teachers included Andy Hunter and Brian Lamond. His two subsequent courses were at the National Scottish Piping Centre in 2000 and 2003. The National Scottish Piping Centre is considered the world academy of piping. It was after the teachings of Willie Morrison, Colin MacLellan and Dougie Pincock that Alberto became Roderick Macleod’s personal student. In 2003, Alberto attained his “Performer’s Certificate” by the Institute of Piping. In March 2003 he won the Archie Kenneth Memorial Quaich. This is considered to be the most important competition for non-professionals in the Scottish Pipes classical music category. In Italy, his musical career entails; teaching, participating in concerts and internships. Currently he is teaching courses in Bazzano (BO), Isernia, Rignano Sul’ Arno (FI), San Giovanni (VR) and Locarno (Switzerland). These courses are promoted by the Bagpipe Italian Group (B.I.G.). The B.I.G. is an Italian association which aim is to guarantee a correct technical and cultural approach to this particular instrument. Alberto’s concert participation is divided between solo and group performances. In fact, he has performed with groups such as The Birkin Tree, Fianna, Fiamma Fumana (also recording their first CD “1.0”) and Whisky Trail. He is particularly brilliant in managing conference-concert exhibitions which prove to be extremely useful to promote “a conscious way to listen at this kind of music”. In addition, he is also the author of numerous articles published in various magazines such as Piping Times, Piping Today, Folk Bulletin, Utriculus. These articles mainly concentrate on the history of pipes and various techniques used. In spring 2006, he achieved his “Senior Certificate in Piping” and the “Tutor Certificate” at the Institute of Piping in Glasgow. In addition, he is the principle author and inspiration for a series of Tutorial CD Rom’s called “The Great Highland Bagpipe”. Also he has recently published his first album titled “A call from Afar”. Finally, he also tests pipes made by the highly acclaimed pipe maker Franco Calanca.
